Small but very sweet story

Once again I’d like to tell you a short, but a very hearty story about Valia Bolobolkina. She is very vivid girl. Valia is thirteen years old, but she looks like five years old child. But each her act is engraved in my memory as a warm recollection. Valia is smart, but quite stubborn child, that’s why sometimes it’s difficult for me to make Valia change her mind. For example, when she was in another group, she decided for some reason that tooth cleaning is a horrible act, and she has to resist  it with all her might. Earlier another volunteers tried to clean the teeth with her, but everything was in vain: Valia was inexorable. The same story was in my group. Every morning I tried to persuade her at least to put the tooth-brush to her lips, but all my attempts were unsuccessful. But one day the miracle happened!

Two weeks ago I was very lucky: I felt myself happy because of one Valia’s act. One morning as usual we were washing: I put the tooth-paste on her tooth-brush and gave it to her. And…instead of taking away all the washing sets, Valia, very slowly and with the fear in her eyes, opened the mouth. I went aside and watched. Carefully she started to brush the upper teeth, then, a minute later, she began to brush the lower teeth. I was staying and watching how her confusion disappeared. I saw that Valia enjoyed it.  After the teeth were cleaned and the tooth-brush was put into the cup, I picked Valia up and started to wheel her round, saying: “Valia, my little Valia, you did it well!”. I’ve spent almost half a year trying to make her doing it.  It is a real pleasure  to see that your efforts weren’t in vain!

A funny lunch

The youngest girls live in my group. Every adult who visits them becomes very popular. They extremely need peoples’ attention, they want to sit on your knees, to embrace your neck. They play with each other very rarely. They know everything about each other, but what can give the same person?

The funny exception of this rule was the play of Masha Porshueva and Valya Bolobolkina. There is 12.30 a.m. and the girls know that now the nannies will bring them meal, put it into their plates, wait a little to cool and serve the table. This process seems to the girls too long and tiring. They begin to whimper waiting for the soup. The volunteers persuade and abuse them, don’t pay attention, so try to calm them in different ways. It happens very often. Nevertheless when the girls are naughty their lunch becomes the continuation of the previous mischief. An hour before the lunch we were playing dish. Valya was fond of feeding everybody using the toy spoon.

The lunch time came, but Valya has not yet went out of the image of a kind wet-nurse. The nanny served her table with the soup but instead of eating Valya began feeding her neighbor. Masha opened her mouth and Valya fed her the first and the second dish spoon by spoon. She is so cheerful not rather often. As a result everybody was happy: Masha who had a double-lunch, Valya who enjoyed playing and I who observed this unusual action.

Our ‘YES!’

Masha is a Down-girl. She is seven. She can’t speak yet. To tell the truth people with the Down-syndrome are taught speaking not rather often. As a rule their vocabulary consists of the words which we can count using fingers of a one hand only. Masha tries to blab out some simple words but it is only an attempt. Once I have heard Masha pronounced one full, beautiful, thoughtful word. It has happened in this way.
Once we went for a walk together listening to my player. She always points at her ear to show she wants to listen to music. This time when we have just went out of the building, I asked without her request: - Masha, would you like to listen to music?
She replies me - Yes!
I couldn’t imagine such a clear answer ‘YES’! Continuing our talk I began to ask questions that supposed to have ‘Yes’ as an answer.
- Masha, do you like that swing?
She answers me - Yes!
- Masha, let’s gather flowers?
- Manya, look at the sky! Let’s count clouds?
- Masha, do you enjoy this song?
She answers me always - Yes!!! Yes!!! Yes!!! I think Manya was surprised by her word even more than I! She was glad to blab very much, we were walking and laughing! Masha realized in full measure that it is fine to speak! Her long attempts to speak turned out well! We celebrated this event with a pair of sweets which were eaten at the moment. A lot of children say ‘mummy’ or ‘daddy’ first of all. Masha’s first word was ‘yes’! I suppose in future she will be able to answer my questions using full sentences!
